Abstract

Inadequate reimbursement for long term care: The impact since hospital DRG's

Cost cutting measures, particularly in reimbursement mechanisms in acute care, have affected long-term care in nursing homes. Since the advent of DRGs, in the mid 1980's, nurses working in long-term care began reporting that their residents were more acutely ill than ever before. Studies measuring the impact of DRGs in nursing homes confirm that residents are being discharged from acute care settings "quicker" and "sicker." It is imperative that reimbursement to nursing homes be improved so that staff can provide the care the more acutely ill residents require.
