This proposed work is closely tied to a defining characteristic of our nation. We are aging; nursing homes will continue to bear greater burdens for care; governments, insurers and individuals now spend $70 billion and the number will increase to $139 billion by 2020; and yet the industry continues to have issues with poor quality of care, variable performance of caregiving personnel and lack of implementation of proven care interventions. One new hope for improvement in nursing homes is the introduction of information technology, including bedside devices that will give healthcare workers key information to make good care decisions and link them to other healthcare workers.
