Upon written request from a nursing facility or the Department of Health and Senior Services, we can calculate recommended staffing levels for RNs, LPNs, and NAs based on the acuity of the residents in a facility using RUGS III and national staffing studies sponsored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The national staffing studies are based on hours per resident per day. These recommended staffing levels are approximations which are used as a guide to help facilities examine their staffing levels. Staff mix (RN, LPN, NA) is a facility judgment and staffing levels are unique to each facility, taking into account resident and facility characteristics.
