Efforts at studying staff turnover have been very problematic, due to the fact that most nursing facilities do not track and cannot calculate employee turnover. We believe staff retention is a more accurate staffing measure than turnover calculations. Therefore, we have designed a project to address the issue of health care staff retention by measuring employee retention and identifying the key features that facilitate retention in exemplar nursing facilities. We have developed and pilot tested a method using date of hire, job category, and percent of effort (all easily retrievable from payroll data) for calculating staff retention. We are currently testing the method in a larger sample.
